The bright pink tractor was spinning around and around, and smoke and steam surrounded it. Grape juice and bread came out of the smokestack! When the smoke and steam cleared away, M&M and Gummy Bear saw that they were in the city of Jerusalem in front of a big house. They knew that they were in Jerusalem because there was a sign that said: ‘This is Jerusalem, and this is a big house!’
Gummy Bear was about to go into the house, when M&M pulled him away from the door! A man was coming up the street with a jug of water on his shoulder, and two other men were following him. They were headed straight toward the door of the house.
As the man was the water jug was about to go into the house, the two other men ran up to him and said, “Our names are Peter and John, and our master asks, ‘Where is the guest room for the Lord to celebrate the Passover with His disciples?’”
The man answered, “I have been expecting you. I have a large room in the upper part of my house that is ready for you, let me show it to you.”
The man took Peter and John into the house and showed them a nice upstairs room that had everything that they needed except for the food! Peter and John got busy and went out to buy the food that was needed for the Passover meal.
Later that afternoon, Jesus and the other ten disciples arrived at the house and found that everything was ready. Peter and John had done a good job! M&M and Gummy Bear were so excited because they knew that this was going to be the Last Supper right before Jesus died for our sins on the cross. They could not believe that they were going to see this meal! Gummy Bear was so excited that he was dancing around the room, and he accidentally bumped into the table and a tray of vegetables fell onto the floor with a crash! Since the disciples could not see or hear M&M or Gummy Bear, they had no idea how that tray of vegetables fell off the table, and they began to blame each other! While the disciples were arguing, Jesus walked over to Gummy Bear and quietly said to him, “You are going to have to be more careful!”
Gummy Bear was embarrassed and scared, and he ran over to M&M and whispered, “Jesus can see and hear us, He knew that I knocked the vegetables off the table!” M&M whispered back to him, “Of course Jesus can see and hear us! He is God, He can see and hear everything in the universe!”
Jesus and the disciples sat down around the table and began the Passover meal. During the meal Jesus told his disciples,
“I have been very eager to eat this Passover meal with you before my suffering begins. For I tell you now that I don’t eat this meal again until its meaning is fulfilled in the Kingdom of God.”
The disciples were so excited that they did not notice that Jesus said that He was going to suffer, all they heard was that Jesus said that he would not eat this meal again until the Kingdom of God came. They thought that God’s Kingdom was going to start right after supper! They thought that Jesus was going to go out and conquer the world!
The disciples started arguing about who was going to be the greatest in God’s Kingdom, but Jesus set them straight. Jesus said,
“Those who are the greatest among you should take the lowest rank, and the leader should be like a servant”.
The disciples did not know what to say, so they stopped arguing about who was the greatest.
During the meal Jesus did an unusual thing:
He took some bread and gave thanks to God for it. Then He broke it in pieces and gave it to the disciples, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”
At the end of the meal Jesus did another unusual thing:
After supper He took another cup of wine and said, “This cup is the new covenant between God and His people – an agreement confirmed with my blood, which is poured out as a sacrifice for you.”
The disciples were confused, they did not understand what Jesus was talking about, but they were too embarrassed to ask questions.
Just then M&M and Gummy Bear heard the bright pink tractor start! They thought that the tractor was going to go away and leave them, so they ran out of the house as quickly as they could! They jumped onto the bright pink tractor, but Gummy Bear hit his knee on the bright red button! Gummy Bear yelled, “Help me! Help me! I hurt my knee!”
Instantly the bright pink tractor began spinning in circles, smoke and steam surrounded them, a crowing rooster came out of the smokestack…
What Gummy Bear, M&M and you can learn from this story:
The story of the Last Supper is found in the Bible in Luke 22:7-20.
The Passover meal that was being celebrated is a Jewish holiday that looks back at the time when God delivered the Jewish people from slavery in Egypt, but it also looked forward to the time when Jesus would pay for the sins of the world by dying on the cross. Jesus’ death and rising from the dead three days later paid for our sins and made it possible for us to be forgiven and have our sins ‘passed over’ in God’s sight because they have been paid for completely!
The disciples did not understand that Jesus was not going to conquer the world at that time, but that He was going to willingly die to pay for the price for sins.
In the Bible in Hebrews 9:22b it says:
For without the shedding of blood, there is no forgiveness.
In the story today, Jesus gave His disciples bread to eat and told them that the bread was to remind them of His body that was broken and killed on the cross. He then gave them a cup of wine to drink and told them that the drink was to remind them of Jesus’ blood that was shed on the cross so that our sins could be forgiven.
Today the believers in Jesus remember and celebrate the death of Jesus on the cross by taking communion. When a believer takes communion, they are given small piece of bread to remind them of Jesus being put on the cross to die and pay for our sins. The believer is then given a small cup of either grape juice or wine (depending on their Church’s practice), to remember Jesus shedding his blood to pay for our sins.
Some Churches take communion every week, and some take communion once a month. Some Churches use grape juice, and some use wine. The main thing is to remember that the purpose of communion is to remember what Jesus did for us on the cross!
A person does get their sins forgiven by taking communion. Communion points to Jesus who has paid for our sins. A person gets their sins forgiven by believing in Jesus and asking Him to forgive their sins and come into their heart so that they can live for Him.
In the Bible in John 1:12-13
But to all who believed Him and accepted Him, He gave the right to become children of God. They are reborn – not with a physical birth resulting from human passion or plan, but a birth that comes from God.
