Gus decided to drive to the ocean and sell food to the people on the beach.
The people on the beach were hungry, so they were glad to see Gus and his food bus! Gus was busy all day cooking and selling food. A lot of people even bought duct tape so that they could repair their flip-flops that had broken.
At the end of the day Gus was tired, so he decided to stay on the beach all night and sleep in the food bus. This was a mistake! In the middle of the night Gus woke up because he felt the bus move! It was spooky, the bus was not going frontwards or backward, it was moving from side to side and starting to turn around! Gus summoned all his courage and sat up and looked out the windows, he expected to see a gruesome monster, but there was no monster in sight! Gus could not believe his eyes! The food bus was sitting in water and the water was making the bus move!
While Gus was sleeping, the ocean tide had risen, and now the bus was in danger of getting swept out into the ocean!
Gus started the bus’s motor and tried to drive out of the water, but the wheels just spun in the wet sand! Then Gus felt the bus hit something and heard a scraping noise on the side of the bus! There was an old wooden post sticking out of the water, it used to be part of a pier. Gus quickly grabbed rolls of duct tape and began wrapping the tape around the wooden post, in through a window and around a steering wheel inside the bus.
Gus knew that one piece of tape would not hold the bus in place, so he kept wrapping more and more tape around the wooden post to the steering wheel inside the bus! Gus used up five rolls of duct tape. It worked! The bus was not moving anymore!
Gus could not sleep anymore the rest of the night, but when morning came, the tide started to go down, and soon the food bus was sitting on the sand again. Gus spent a long time getting all that duct tape unwrapped from the wooden post and the steering wheel. Finally, duct tape was all off, and he started up the food bus and drove off the beach and up onto a rocky cliff above the beach.
Gus inspected the bus and found that the only damage was that the wooden post had scraped a lot of paint off the side of the bus, the food bus would have to be repainted! The next day the people had to climb the cliff to buy food from Gus, but he felt much safer with the bus on that solid rock!
That night Gus thought he would finally get a good night’s sleep, but he was so wrong! In the middle of the night a strong storm blew in from the ocean! The wind blew fiercely, there was loud thunder, and lightning was striking the ocean! It was raining so hard that Gus could hardly see out the windows of the food bus. Gus was worried about what would happen to him and the bus! The bus rocked from side to side in the gusts of wind, but it sat solid on that rock! After a couple of hours, the storm was over, and all was calm again.
Gus remember that Jesus had told a parable about building a house on sand and building a house on solid rock.
He looked it up in his Bible and found the parable in Matthew 7:24-27
Anyone who listens to My teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock. Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won’t collapse because it is built on bedrock. But anyone who hears My teaching and doesn’t obey it is foolish, like a person who builds a house on sand. When the rains and floods come and the winds beat against that house, it will collapse with a mighty crash.
Gus wrote in the Gus-Bus Eternal Journal:
I found out how scary it is to be on a sandy foundation when a flood of water comes. Jesus said in this parable that if I just listen to His words, but do not take action, my life is like it was based on soft sand. When the hard times in life come, I will be swept away if I do not take action and put Jesus’ teaching into practice in my life!
Jesus, please help me not to just listen to Bible lessons and sermons but help me to really learn about You and to put Your teachings into action in my life! I want my life to be anchored on Your solid rock!
