The kids and the leaders finally crossed from the State of Missouri into the State of Oklahoma. The Ugly Little Blue Bus was running great, but the kids were getting hungry. They asked the Leader, “When can we stop and get something to eat?” The Leader promised them that they would stop soon. About 20 miles later they came to the city of Miami Oklahoma (not Florida). They were driving down the main road looking for a place to eat. They saw a McDonalds, but they were tired of McDonalds, they wanted something different! In the distance they saw a sign for a Taco Bell, and they decided that they might as well eat there. Then they saw it…right next to the Taco Bell there was another place to eat called Waylan’s KuKu Burgers! The restaurant looked kind of like a Cu-Cu Clock, and it looked like a fun place to eat! There were even some old cars parked in the parking lot.
The menu was very interesting, there were some normal things, like hamburgers, cheeseburgers, and fries, but there were also some very unusual things like; fried squash (in season), fried okra, fried mushrooms, and waffle fries! Most of the kids ordered regular cheeseburgers and fries, and most of them thought that they were the best burgers that they had ever had. A lot of them also had an old-fashioned strawberry shake, and a few of them even tried a cherry lime-aid! All the food was great, and everyone was satisfied!
The owner of Ku-Ku burgers, Eugene Waylan, came out and talked to the group. He told them that in the 1960’s there were around two hundred Ku-Ku burger restaurants in the middle of our country, but the company went out of business around 1970. In the 1950’s hamburgers sold for 15 cents each! This Ku-Ku restaurant was built in 1965 and Mr. Waylan bought it in 1973 (three years after the Ku-Ku Burger chain had gone out of business). Mr. Waylan decided to keep this Ku-Ku restaurant going, and now it is the only one in the world! Mr. Waylan had been making hamburgers for people right here in this restaurant for over 45 years, and he has no plans for quitting! He loves his work, and he loves meeting all the people from all over the country who still travel on Route 66!
The Ku-Ku bird on the front of the restaurant used to chirp twice at the beginning of every hour, and once at half past the hour. The clock broke around 2015 and hopefully it will get fixed someday.
That evening at the campground the Leader talked to the kids about the Ku-Ku Burger Restaurant. He pointed out that Mr. Waylan bought Ku-Ku Burgers three years after Ku-Ku Bergers chain officially went out of business, but Mr. Wayland decided that he was going to keep the restaurant going even without the help of others. Mr. Waylan was faithful to his plan and has kept Ku-Ku Burgers open for over 45 years!
Faithfulness is also one of the main characteristics of God. God is faithful to the people who believe in Him and have asked for forgiveness. God never fails to be faithful.
In Deuteronomy 7:9 says:
Understand, therefore, that the Lord you God is indeed God. He is the faithful God who keeps His covenant for a thousand generations and lavishes His unfailing love on those who love Him and obey His commands.
II Thessalonians 3:3 says:
But the Lord is faithful; He will strengthen you and guard you from the evil one.
Psalms 119: 90 says:
Your faithfulness extends to every generation, as enduring as the earth You created.
Mr. Waylan is a good human example of being faithful, but no human can compare to God’s faithfulness. Even the best Christians, with the best intentions, will be unfaithful to God many times in their lifetime, but even though they fail, God is never unfaithful to them.
II Timothy 2:13 says:
If we are unfaithful, He remains faithful, for He cannot deny who He is.
We are unfaithful to God when we sin and fall short of God’s standards for us. When this happens, we need to immediately confess our sin to God and ask for forgiveness.
I John 1:9 says:
But if we confess our sins to Him, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.
