Gus had bought the Ugly Little Blue Bus from the group after they had driven on Route 66 from Chicago to Santa Monica Pier in Los Angeles California.
Gus did not want to travel across the country, he loved California and wanted to spend his life selling food to people. He had seen many food trucks in the cities, and he decided that he wanted a food bus. He was going to sell; tacos,
french fries,
grilled cheese sandwiches,
and duct tape (because you can never have too much duct tape).
Gus did not want his food bus to known as the Ugly Little Blue Bus, so he painted it, it was now called The Food Bus by Gus!
Gus was also a Christian, and he wanted to really get to know God and learn how to live for God, so he decided that he was going to read his Bible every day and, in his prayers, he was going to ask God to help him understand the Bible and put everything he learned into practice. To help him remember everything, Gus was going to keep a journal where he recorded the things that he learned about God. He even named his journal, he called it, ‘The Gus-Bus Eternal Journal’.
After Gus finished painting the bus, he had to get all the supplies and appliances installed into the bus. One night he was almost finished, but it was getting dark. Gus wanted to work some more in the bus, and he had a plan! His cell phone had a flashlight on it,
he would turn on the flashlight and use duct tape to tape it to the wall of the bus. That way he could see what he was doing! It seemed like a great plan, Gus turned on the flashlight on his cell phone, and tore off a big piece of duct tape so that he could tape the phone to the wall. Then it happened…Gus tripped on a box on the floor and his phone flew out of his hand! He tried to grab the phone, and he accidentally put the duct tape completely over the light on the phone! It was a very dark night, it was cloudy so there was no light from the moon or stars, and there were no other lights nearby. It was pitch black and Gus could not find his phone! Even though he had light, it was covered up and he could not find it! After some frantic crawling around on the floor, Gus finally found his phone and took the duct tape off the light.
The next day Gus thought about how dark it was the night before when the light was covered. He remembered that Jesus had told a parable about light.
It is found in the Bible in Matthew 5:14-16 Jesus says:
You are the light of the world – like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.
Gus wrote in the Gus-Bus Eternal Journal:
After my scary time in the dark, I now realize the importance of light. This world is a very dark place because of all the sin and all the people who do not believe in God. I have the light of God’s truth in me, I need to let God’s light shine out from me into the dark world. I cannot change the whole world, but with God’s help I can maybe change a little piece of the world and make a difference in the people around me.
