Kris and Kell stayed at Dewey Beach until dark, at first, they were watching other people parasailing, and then they watched the sunset. When they got back to their hotel, there was a message at the front desk for them. The message said, “Return your rental car tonight. Tomorrow morning, meet your boat captain at the front desk at 6 a.m.”
Kris was excited! He said to Kell, “It sounds like our next adventure is going to be on a boat, I wonder where the boat is going to take us?”
The next morning Kris and Kell got up early and they were at the front desk before 6 a.m. Promptly on time, a woman wearing a captain’s uniform came into the hotel and said, “We need to get down to the pier, our boat needs to leave very soon so that we get to our destination before midnight!”
Kell asked, “Where are we going?”
The captain said, “Rhode Island”, but she would not give them any more details.
When they got to the pier, they could hardly believe their eyes; the boat was beautiful and it looked fast!
Kris asked how fast the boat could go, and the Captain said that the boat could cruise at 20 knots (that’s 23 miles per hour), but we will be taking it easy this trip and will cruise at 18 knots (that’s 21 miles per hour).
It was a beautiful day for cruising on the ocean, there was a light breeze that kept it from getting too hot, but the waves were very gentle. Kris and Kell enjoyed the trip very much. The boat stayed close to shore most of the time, so they could enjoy the scenery and sometimes even wave to people. They were very careful to use a lot of sunscreen so that they would not get sunburned while they were out on the ocean all day.
The boat was very comfortable and had a great galley (kitchen) and even had a bedroom for them to sleep in.
That evening they did not want to go to sleep because the stars were beautiful and the ocean was so calm! The captain encouraged them to stay up on deck because they would arrive at their destination about 11 p.m.
Just before 11 p.m. they saw a flashing light on the shore. The light flashed every 9 seconds, just like a rotating light at an airport. The captain told them that they were seeing the lighthouse on Beavertail Island. The light would guide them safely into the harbor.
Soon they went past the lighthouse and tied up the boat at a dock on shore. The captain told them that they would sleep on the boat that night, and in the morning, they would continue their adventure! Then the captain said, “Welcome to Jamestown, Rhode Island.”
The next morning the captain woke them up and told them that breakfast was ready. After they had eaten, the captain pointed to two bicycles on the pier and told them that those bicycles were for them. When they got to the bicycles, there was a map for them to follow.
Kris and Kell carefully followed the directions on the map and soon found themselves on a bridge that took them across to Beavertail Island! They were going to the lighthouse that they had passed last night!
When they got to the lighthouse, they found out that this is the third oldest lighthouse in the United States, the original wooden tower was built in 1749. The wooden tower was replaced by a stone tower in 1754, and the current granite tower was built in 1856. There is a museum at the lighthouse and the Frensel lens that used to be in the tower is on display in the museum.
Before the lighthouse had electricity, a kerosene lamp was inside the lens to provide the light. The kerosene lamp was smokey and the lighthouse keeper had to clean the lens every day so that the light would shine brightly. In 1991 an airport rotating light was installed in the lighthouse.
Kris and Kell learned so much about the lighthouse and the fascinating and hard life that the lighthouse keepers had to live. There was so much to do and see, that Kris and Kell spent the whole day at the lighthouse, they even got to climb to the top of the tower. Kell counted the steps as they went up to the top, and she counted 49 steps, and then they had to climb a 7-foot ladder to get into the lantern room.
It was a great day, and all too soon they had to get on their bikes and ride about 4 miles back into town to their hotel.
Lesson Learned about God
That night in their hotel, Kris said, “I know the lessen we can learn about God today. Jesus told us that Believers are the ‘light of the world’.”
Kell agreed and said, “That is right, we learned this lesson once before, but it is so important that it is good to be reminded of it again. Just like the lighthouse warns boats and large ships about danger and guides them into a safe harbor, Believer are supposed to warn people that do not know God about the danger of eternal punishment after this life is over and guide them into a relationship with God so that their sins are forgiven and they are on their way to heaven after this life is over.
In the Bible in Matthew 5:14-16 Jesus says:
“You are the light of the world – like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.”
In the Bible in Philippians 2:14-15 it says:
Do everything without complaining and arguing, so that no one can criticize you. Live clean, innocent lives as children of God, shining like bright lights in a world full of crooked and perverse people.
If you are a Believer in Jesus, decide to live in such a way that you will be a light to guide lost people into the safety of Jesus.
