Kris and Kell were awakened early in the morning by their phones ringing, and a person pounding on the door of their hotel room, all at the same time. Kell sleepily said to Kris, “It is probably our driver. She is always so early and so impatient! You go answer the door this time.” Kris got out of bed and stumbled to the door, and sure enough, it was their driver! She yelled, “Hurry up! There is no time to lose! I must get you to your next adventure! Why are you just standing there? You are wasting time! I will meet you in front of the hotel in exactly 10 minutes!”
Kell heard the conversation, and she just smiled. She had expected that their driver was going to act like this, and Kell was ready! She had packed their suitcases before they went to bed, she had laid out their clothes for that day, and she had packed food they could eat while they were traveling. All they had to do was get dressed and brush their teeth!
In less than 10 minutes they were in the car and speeding towards New York City! Kris and Kell were happy and talking about all the things that they wanted to see in New York City, then it happened…the car was going up a ramp onto the highway and the speed limit on the ramp was 35 mph. The driver decided to go 65 mph on that ramp! The tires were screeching and smoking, and all the breakfast food flew into the air and landed on Kell! Kell was covered with orange juice, maple syrup, milk, cereal and jelly! She was a sticky mess! She said to Kris, “I cannot even change my clothes because you put our suitcases in the trunk!” Kris said, “No, you put the suitcases in the trunk.” Kell answered, “No I did not put the suitcases in the trunk!” They suddenly realized that neither of them had put the suitcases in the trunk, they had left the suitcases in front of the hotel! Their driver said, “No problem. After I drop you off, I will go back and get the suitcases. I will bring them to you tomorrow morning!” So, Kell was going to be a sticky mess for that whole day! Kris almost started to laugh, but then he decided that maybe he should not laugh at Kell.
Soon they had another surprise! When they got to New York City, their driver immediately got on a highway that went out of the city. Apparently, they were not going to stop in New York City and have an adventure there! Then they got into a traffic jam! The traffic was bumper-to-bumper, and it was all stopped! No one was moving! Their driver was so impatient! She kept honking the horn and revving up the engine, then she opened her window and began yelling at the other drivers! Kris and Kell were so embarrassed that their driver was acting like this. Then there was another problem! Because the driver’s window was open, some flies came into the car! They immediately started to buzz around ‘sticky Kell’! They were trying to land on her, and she was flapping her arms around and trying to swat those flies. Kris opened his window and tried to get the flies to go out the window, but they did not want to leave Kell, so they had to just put up with those flies!
Eventually they got out of the traffic jam and headed northwest through the State of New York. About five hours later they arrived in a city called Penn Yan, New York! Their driver stopped by a building and Kris and Kell could not believe their eyes! Leaning against the building was a pancake griddle! But this was not an ordinary pancake griddle, it was huge!

Kris and Kell got out of the car to look at this huge pancake griddle, their driver handed Kris an envelope, and then the driver jumped back into the car and zoomed away!
Kris and Kell learned some interesting things about this huge pancake griddle:
- It is the largest pancake griddle in the world. It is 28 feet and one inch in diameter and weighs 10 tons.
- On September 27, 1987, they made the largest pancake in the world on this griddle.
- To make the pancake they needed:
- 15 gallons of cooking oil.
- 2,000 pounds of buckwheat flour.
- 2,000 gallons of water.
- A 2-foot by 3-foot chunk of butter.
- 15 gallons of maple syrup.
- The ingredients had to be mixed in a (clean) cement truck.
- They built a 28-foot circular charcoal fire under the griddle.
- They used a crane to flip the giant pancake.
- The pancake fed 5,000 people.
Kris and Kell got their pictures taken by the huge pancake griddle, and then Kris opened the envelope. Inside were directions to the hotel where they were going to spend the night.
Lesson Learned about God
When Kris and Kell got to their hotel room, the first thing Kell did was take a shower to get all the sticky breakfast food off her face and out of her hair! She also washed her shirt in the sink and borrowed Kris’ shirt so that she had something to wear.
Later they started talking about the giant pancake griddle and the things that they had learned that day. They both agreed that this was not a very exciting adventure. If Kell had not been wearing their breakfast food all over her face, hair, and shirt, this day would have been kind of boring! After being tormented by flies all day, and having people stare at her and laugh at her, Kell decided that she would have preferred a boring day!
Kris said, “Even though it was not an exciting adventure, we can still learn something more about God from this experience. I think it was interesting that the huge pancake fed 5,000 people. It reminded me of the time when Jesus fed 5,000 people.”
Kell answered, “Yes, I thought of that too, but it took a lot of ingredients to make the giant pancake, and a lot of people had to work together to make it happen. When Jesus fed the 5,000 men (plus women and children, so there were a lot more than 5,000), He just used 5 small loaves of bread and 2 small fish. Jesus used His ‘God power’ to make that into enough food to feed all those people! (the Bible story of Jesus feeding the 5,000 can be found in Matthew 14:13-21). Jesus has incredible power to meet our needs! He used this same power to create the whole universe, yet He cares enough for us to be concerned about the needs we have in our life.”
In the Bible in Philippians 4:19-20 it says:
And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from His glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus. Now all glory to God our Father forever and ever! Amen.
