The week after Easter MJ and Precious could hardly wait to get back to the lab and use the time machine again. The next name on the dial was King David, and they could not wait to meet this famous Bible person who had fought a giant named Goliath and later became king of Israel.
The Professor was waiting for them in the lab. He had already turned the dial to King David and everything was ready. The Professor said, “I hope David comes as a young shepherd, I would like to see what he was like when he was younger.”
Precious said, “I hope David comes as the king of Israel, I want to see what a king looks like, and I want to see his royal clothes.”
MJ said, “I hope David comes right after he kills Goliath, I want to hear all the details about the fight!”
The Professor said, “Ooops! I hope Goliath does not come with David, that would be a disaster!”
Precious said, “I do not think Goliath will come here, he is way too big to fit into our booth!”
MJ turned the dial on the time machine to ‘King David’. The Professor pushed the button on the time machine. Nothing happened for about 30 seconds, then the booth began to shake like a mosquito who had too much caffeine, there was the sound of thunder, and the air was filled with music!
An old man burst out of the booth! He had a huge sword, and he was swinging it in every direction! He saw the Professor and yelled, “You must be an enemy!” The Professor said, “Ooops!” David swung the sword at the Professor’s head, and the Professor tried to dodge out of the way. He tripped over an invisible moose and fell under a chair! The sword missed the Professor by inches and went into a wooden beam and got stuck! MJ and Precious sprang into action! They both tackled David, got him down on the floor and sat on him!
The Professor got up slowly, looked around and said, “Where did that invisible moose go?” Of course no one could see an invisible moose, so they all looked at the Professor as if he was crazy. Precious asked David why he had been trying to kill them. David said, “I have had so many enemies that I assumed that when I saw you that you were my enemies.” MJ explained that they were not his enemies, they had transported him through time so that they could talk to him, hear his story, and learn more about God.
David was happy to hear that they were not enemies. They allowed him to sit up and he told them his story.
David told them that he had fought and killed Goliath, in fact the huge sword that was stuck in the wooden beam had been Goliath’s sword. There was no other sword, quite like that one! After he had killed Goliath, he had been recruited as King Saul’s personal musician. After a while, he had led King Saul’s armies. King Saul had become jealous of David and tried to kill him. David had to run for his life and hide for years!
Eventually David had become King of Israel, and God helped him to become one of the greatest kings ever! Life was far from perfect. King David was far from perfect! Several times he disobeyed God in a huge way, and God had to discipline him. There was murder within his family, and King David had to run for his life!
Being the King of Israel was not an easy thing to do! King David’s favorite time of life was when he was a young boy. He was the youngest boy in the family, and he was given the job of taking care of the sheep. No one else wanted to be the shepherd, so they made the youngest one do that job.
Being the family shepherd turned out to be the greatest time in King David’s life! While he was alone in the pasture with the sheep, he found God in a very special way. David had musical talent, and while he was watching the sheep he learned to sing praises to God in heaven. He became the best musician in the country and wrote many songs about God. Some of these songs are in the book of Psalms in the Bible!
David became a friend of God while he was watching those sheep. God said that David was ‘a man after God’s own heart’ (Acts 13:22). This was a very special time in David’s life, but he kept his friendship with God his whole life! Even when King David went through times of sin in his life, God still said that David was a man after His own heart.
King David longed for the times when he was young. During those times he and God were so close, but as he grew up the difficulties of life got in the way. At times King David felt like he was so far from God, but God never gave up on King David. God did discipline King David when it was needed, but God’s love for King David never went away!
The Professor told King David, MJ and Precious that God still works the same way today. When a person asks Jesus to forgive their sins and take control of their life, they become a friend of God. Even though a believer is forgiven, that person is far from perfect. All of us struggle with sin in our life constantly, but God does not give up on us!
In the Bible in Philippians 1:6 it says:
And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue His work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.
In the Bible in Romans 8:38-39 it says:
And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow – not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below – indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.
God never gives up on a person who has asked Jesus to come into their life!
It was time for King David to return to his own time. The Professor tried to pull Goliath’s sword out of the wooden beam, but he could not do it. MJ, Precious, and King David helped the Professor, and together they managed to pull the sword out of the wood. The sword was not damaged at all! There was truly no other sword like that one!
King David took the sword and went into the booth. Precious closed the door, and MJ pushed the button. Nothing happened for about 30 seconds, then the booth began to shake like a mosquito who had too much caffeine, there was the sound of thunder, and King David was gone.
