Food Bus By Gus – Parable of the Yeast

Gus was excited!  He had a great idea for his food bus!  He was going to add another kind of food that he would sell!  Gus had found a recipe for homemade bread, and he thought that a lot of people would like to buy that.  It looked so easy to make, the picture on the recipe showed a loaf of light and fluffy bread that had a golden crust.  It looked so good that Gus almost wanted to eat the picture.

Gus got out a big bowl and began mixing all the ingredients.  Gus was in for a surprise, he was missing one ingredient, he did not have any yeast!

Gus sat down for a minute and thought about it and decided that it would not really matter.  The recipe only asked for a little bit of yeast, it was nothing compared to the amount of flour and other ingredients, no one would ever miss it.

Gus followed all the rest of the directions exactly, and baked the loaf of bread, and then the problems began!  The loaf of bread was not fluffy, it was flat, and wet, and it was not golden brown.

Gus thought that maybe it needed to be baked some more, so he put it back in the oven.  Soon smoke started coming out of the oven!  The outside of the bread was burnt, but the inside was heavy and wet!  It did not look like a loaf of bread at all!

Gus thought that maybe the yeast was important after all, so he googled ‘yeast’ on his phone.  Gus found out that yeast is what makes bread rise and become fluffy.  Even though there is not much yeast compared to other ingredients, it is very important.  It also mentioned that in Bible times, yeast was also called leaven.  Gus decided to look up leaven and yeast in his Bible, and he found that Jesus had told a parable about yeast!

In Luke 13:20-21 Jesus says:

“What else is the Kingdom of God like?  It is like the yeast a woman used in making bread.  Even though she put only a little yeast in three measures of flour, it permeated every part of the dough.”

Just like a little yeast changes a whole loaf of bread, a Christian should change their world even if they are the only Christian in their little part of the world!

Gus wrote in the Gus-Bus Eternal Journal:

Today I learned about the parable of the Yeast!  A little yeast changes a whole batch of dough.  In the same way I want to change the world around me.  I need to show God’s love to everyone that comes to my food bus!  I need to love God with everything that is in me, and then love everyone else that comes into my life!  I cannot do this on my own, I am so weak and selfish!  God help me to do this!
